During the mid 1880’s, Dr. Leslie E. Keeley was among the first medical pioneers to recognize alcoholism as a disease. Dr. Keeley and his associates, John R. Oughton and Curtis Judd, founded the Keeley Institute in Dwight for the treatment of alcoholism.

Within 20 years, the Institute had developed a reputation for the successful, humane treatment of alcoholism. The Keeley Company grew from its beginning in Dwight to more than two hundred branches throughout the United States and Europe. The Livingston Hotel, attached to the treatment center was used by patients while in Dwight.

The former Campus school house built in 1950. This two-room school house taught grades 1-3 and grades 4-6. The school closed in the 1980s and now serves as the community building where village board meetings and events such as Campus Days, Halloween costume contests, and Easter egg hunts are held.

Across from St. Paul’s Church is an entrance to a 1937 pedestrian tunnel under Route 66, known locally as the “subway”. The entrance was sealed in the 1950s. The first 3 steps and the railing were replaced in the spring of 2006 by the Route 66 Association of Illinois.

The fact that this tunnel was a necessity to safely cross Route 66 is a surprise to anone standing on the quiet corner today. It is a dramatic reminder of the importance of Route 66 as a national travel corridor.

The Friendship Shoe Fence consists of dozens of pairs wearable shoes. Shoes are tied together & hung over the woven wire fence or just hung on the fence. Some are placed on the ground in baskets or boxes if it is too hard to hang them. A person may take shoes and also leave shoes.

Jerome Pohlen featured the Shoe Fence on a page in his book “ODDBALL ILLINOIS”.

Located at N 1st St in Fairbury, North Park features playgrounds, a basketball court, tennis courts, pickleball courts, a public swimming pool, sand volleyball courts, a walking trail, and pavilions for events. The pool opens the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and remains open until Fair weekend. Hours are 12pm to 7pm daily.

There is a large open green space that allows visitors to play any game they please or to just enjoy nature around them. To reserve a pavilion or outdoor shelter, please call Larry Ray at (815) 674-3660.

Built in 1951 by Clarence Gall, this gymnasium is up for Historic Preservation in Kankakee County Illinois due to its rare engineering and architectural design. Since its construction, the gym has undergone very little change. The barrel-vaulted roof, with ribs of glue-laminated wood is in great condition, as is the original wooden floating floor.

For 37 years it was home to the Reddick High School Bulldogs sports teams in the R.U.C.E. (Reddick, Union Hill, Campus and Essex) Community School District and later for the Reddick Grade School as part of the Herscher School District.

Salem4youth is located in a unique and beautiful rural setting about 2 hours southwest of Chicago. Most of our young men need a peaceful setting to work through their struggles/issues. We have a rich heritage and our facility continues to evolve as the Lord provides.

Work teams not only from local area churches but also from as far away as North Carolina and Ohio come and bless the work here through facility improvement projects. These groups work side-by-side with our young men. You are always welcome to come and visit us and tour our campus!

On August 10, 1887 a small town became a community of heroes when an excursion train fatally crashed. The train departed from Peoria, Illinois and was headed for Niagara Falls when a bridge collapsed, killing 85 and injuring 365.

The citizens of Chatsworth came to the rescue for these strangers on this ill-fated train as makeshift hospitals were set up in private homes and public buildings were turned in morgues.
